TIMERGARA: An army captain and a lance naik were killed and five other security men injured when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb near the Islam Darra security checkpost on the Timergara-Maidan road on Thursday.

Sources said that the vehicle carrying army officials was going from Maidan to Timergara.

The dead were identified as Captain Umar Zeb and Lace Naik Shehzad. The injured, Colonel Saeed, Hawaldar Nawaz, Hawaldar Shaukat and sepoys Ahmad Ali and Ahsan Ali, were taken to the DHQ hospital in Timergara where they are stated to be stable.

After the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. They claimed to have killed a suspected boy trying to flee the spot soon after the explosion. They said he had a remote-control in his hand.

However, local people said the boy was innocent and he had a mobile phone in his hand instead of a remote-control. Curfew has been imposed in the area.

Meanwhile, an exchange of fire between troops and militants took place in a nearby area. Security forces claimed to have killed 12 militants during a search operation and the exchange of fire.

The security forces also claimed to have arrested three suspect militants in the area. Fresh clashes erupted between the security forces and the Maidan Taliban at Kumbar when troops launched a search operation on Thursday morning.

A sepoy, Mahboob, was killed when militants attacked the troops. Security forces said they had killed 10 militants in a counter attack.

The security forces pounded militants’ hideouts in different parts of Maidan and fired mortar shells from Lal Qilla and Islam Dara checkposts. The situation is tense in the district after a three-day calm.
